BRINGING HOME GOLD - two medals and 1st Place trophy! On April 2nd at the University of California Riverside, Abby Reinke Elementary School’s "Furs, Fins, Feathers and Friends" Team competed against 24 other schools from throughout the state at the California Odyssey of the Mind State Tournament and finished in 1st Place with the Highest Overall Score and Best Style! Within the constraints of an 8-minute original skit, all written, choreographed, and performed solely by this all-girl team, they depicted problem solving from the perspective of three different animals exhibiting acts of kindness, using their humorous performance as a platform to deliver an anti-bullying message that "You shouldn't judge people by their looks. Just imagine how boring the world would be if everybody was the same".
All of this "hands-on" creative problem solving, including their anti-bullying message, was done by the students without any adult assistance. After their 3rd Place finish at the Coastal Regional Tournament in Encinitas on March 12th, the team advanced to the State Tournament this past weekend. Representing our school with an amazing performance, the team consisting of Emelia Fernandez (5th Grade), Lauren Fu (5th Grade), Jada Magrini (5th Grade), Carly Noland (5th Grade), Gabrielle Fowler (4th Grade), Camryn De Los Reyes (3rd Grade) and Mackenzie Farley (3rd Grade), brought to Abby Reinke Elementary School, the Temecula Valley School District and the City of Temecula the California State Championship Title. Now they will enter the international phase of competition at Iowa State University from May 25-28th where over 800 teams from around the world will compete in the 37th Odyssey of the Mind World Finals. The competition emphasizes creativity and teamwork and has grown into the largest international creative problem-solving competition worldwide. Millions of kids have been working hard all year perfecting their solutions and competing within their regions, states and countries. Only a few advance to World Finals — these teams represent the best of the best creative minds.

Abby Reinke Superheroes are beginning to learn new school wide behavior standards. Throughout the year, we will be focusing specifically on following instructions, staying on task, accepting no for an answer, and disagreeing appropriately. Please see the attached handout on the steps ARES Superheroes are learning and using. All students are currently focusing on "Following Instructions", so make sure to ask your Superhero about the steps they have learned!
